"Our teams have made the seizure and informed the police following which the person selling the drugs was arrested. Investigation is on to catch others involved in the illegal chain of supply," drugs controller in-charge Mamina Patnaik said. She said that the teams have been conducting raids in different areas of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in search of couch syrup, containing codeine, and other narcotic drugs, which are being sold without prescription. According to Drug and Cosmetic Act and Rules, pharmacies selling such drugs need to maintain proper documentation. Moreover, such drugs should not be sold without proper prescription. However, such drugs are being illegally sold by pharmacies as well as other stores and are being widely used as intoxicants. "Such drugs are very dangerous if used in high quantity for intoxication," said Sobhan Rath, a medicine specialist.
